I wish I could make this better

Some of you may already know about the slaughter of 100 healthy sled dogs in Whistler (the link takes you to the first article, no pictures of anything bad, but just a warning that if you do read it it does have some graphic details about what happened). Along with most people of the community here, I am disgusted, disturbed and just sad about the whole thing. Also having owned a sled dog (Jackson, who is in my icon) it hits a bit harder to home. I wish I could do the same to the people who did this to these poor dogs. This could have been handled so much better, even if it had to come to putting them down there are so many more humane ways to do it. I am really shocked that the worker who was ordered to do this went through with it or didn't even reach out to the police or an animal agency about this. It was said that this guy spent a lot of time with these dogs and had affection for them. I just don't understand what kind of human being would do that if that were the case. I wish that animal cruelty carried harsher criminal chargers as well, because I think that could help in some cases.

Sadly this isn't anything new, it happens everyday in every country. I just wish the people who did these kinds of things knew what it was like for the animal, then they'd think twice.

I haven't heard this and won't click the link because...well, you know I can't handle things like this at ALL, but - my god, what the hell. Why do people do such horrendous, cruel things? How could they kill HEALTHY dogs?! Couldn't they have found homes for them or something? What's the POINT?

This week, there was a story about a guy here who ran a "training" place for dogs - well, it was fake, and he ended up scamming people out of their money, but he also somehow managed to steal some of the dogs - and then euthanized them. Just because. A soldier who had just come home expected to come home to his dog, and when he got back, the woman who had been caring for her said she had taken her to this training place and then she had gone missing. He searched and searched for her and finally found out she had been put down, by orders of this guy. It was the most horrible thing, seeing this soldier, this man who had seen the horrors of war, crying in an interview and saying he just wanted to hold his girl in his arms again. (Literally sobbing writing this, wtf is wrong with me.) I hate people sometimes. I frankly feel that anyone who abuses or kills an animal should be prosecuted in the way they would prosecute a child abuser or murderer.

Business went down after the Olympics left the city and they had all these dogs so... I don't get it either. Humanity is just such a fucked up and cruel thing sometimes.

That does kill me though about that soldier. I would react in the same way, I am sure.

It's been shoved in our faces here since it's on the front page of a newspaper, headline news ect., so I can't quite get away from it, but I know what you mean. I read parts of the article and had to stop because of some of the details.

I want the mans balls bronzed on a platter. Actually anyone who does anything of this nature to any dog or animal.

I have a rescue dog that was from a puppy mill and the torture she went through as a breeding female is atrocious.

2.5 years later, she doesn't leave her spot in the house unless it's to go out, we can't be behind her, we can't make sudden noises around her, and any noise that isn't the television, or talking will set her into a barking frenzy.

Ok, I'm done venting. It's just something that is near to me too.

Same. And you know what sucks, I live in PA, one of the puppy mill capitals of the US. It disgusts me to know that there is stuff like this going on in my backyard, when people try to change the law, these "breeders" piss and moan and nothing gets done. It's a neverending circle.

I feel the same way you do. This was a sick thing that happened, but sadly this doesn't shock me. Humans are disgusting, vile creatures for the most part.

This is how I feel with ANY animal. Dogs, cows, pigs etc. The horrible thing is farm animals suffer so much but because it's 'for food' it's ok to torture and slaughter them. Why don't people see the connection? An animal is an animal, no matter what animal it is. Why be so upset over dogs and not over pigs? Just because people eat one and not the other. That kind of attitude is why animal welfare is in such a crappy place. Why this kind of shit is still going on.

/rant. I'm ok. But yes, those who did this if it were up to me very bad things would happen to them. Right now I'm going to go cuddle my dog. :\

Dude. DUDE. They could have given those dogs to people who actually USE SLED DOGS. Like oh I don't know, people in Alaska, the Northern Territories...dogs don't come cheap and people who use or need sled dogs would have been happy to have them!

Hell just...giving them to an animal shelter! People are always looking for pets! Just because it was a sled dog doesn't make it unadoptable! DX

I hate that any animal is treated like this. Just because they are animals or pets or for food/clothing/testing/whatever. And probably nothing will ever get done legally to protect animals because they can't talk like we do and the problems that people bring up always overshadow our animal rights issues.

Animals deserve respect at the very least.
