"I Was Looking For a Challenge"
Orlando "Legolas" Bloom about pets, shorts and Andre
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few months ago, I've had the great chance of talking to both, Andre Schneider and Orlando Bloom, about their short film "Deed Poll", which was written by Jeremy Podeswa and directed by Jeffrey Arsenault.
When I finally saw the movie, I was overwhelmed by their electric performances, so I did another interview with Schneider in London. Then, on Monday, 20th of May, I called Bloom, who is currently down in Australia to film with Heath Ledger, to have a brief chat with him about his friendship with Andre.
BOYER: What do you consider as the hardest part of your job?
BLOOM: At times, I think it's pretty sad that I had to give away Maude, my dog that I loved like my own child. That was really hard [...] And you neglect some friendships, which is equally sad.
BOYER: I recently read some interviews with Andre Schneider regarding "Deed Poll". But as far as I'm informed, he hasn't seen it. Have you?
BLOOM: Yes, I have.
BOYER: And ...?
BLOOM: Well, it's a hard-hitting movie, if I had to put it in one sentence. Did you see it?
BOYER: I did. And I loved it! Especially these intense kisses between you and Andre. They looked so real! Did you enjoy filming with him?
BLOOM: "Deed Poll" was the most challenging movie I've done so far. I mean, I was looking for a challenge when I auditioned, but when filming started, I wasn't feeling very well at all. You know, we've had some trouble with our director. Then, there was this nudity thing; we had to be naked for 34 days [...] But Atti was divine, I mean, this was the first time we actually worked together. He's amazing! He's German, you know, very disciplined and stuff. But also he's so much fun [...] I mean, you know his irony and quick-wittedness. I always loved his soft voice and his looks. So it was quite easy to fall in love with him. [laughs]
BOYER: Andre's told me about the story with Arsenault. You know, when he said to you "It's called acting, my dear" ...
BLOOM: Ah, yes, that was a funny little story. You know, in that first love scene I had to be reluctant, and I said to Jeff, "No-one's gonna believe this, dude. Have you seen him? No man would hesitate to go to bed with him, no matter how straight he is. How am I going to do this?", and he replied, "It's called acting, my dear." [laughs] I was joking, of course.
BOYER: How did you meet Andre?
BLOOM: Joanne [Morley] introduced us at her birthday party four years ago.
BOYER: At reportedly you liked each other from the very start, although she dumped you for him?
BLOOM: Oh, our relationship ended before she met Atti. He wasn't the reason, really. That's just a rumor. But, yes, we were quite fond of each other from the very start.
BOYER: So you didn't know you dated the same girl?
BLOOM: Not at all. Joanne told us much later. You see, we both have quite a good taste. That ties together. [laughs] But we have many other things in common.
BOYER: Like what?
BLOOM: We both like weird clothes, for instance. And pretty girls. [laughs] No, seriously, we share a lot of interests - movies, the same kind of music, traveling, veggie food and so on. We've got a lot to talk about. Politics, for instance.
BOYER: Andre recently stated that he missed you.
BLOOM: Yes, we haven't seen each other since ... it was March, I think. That's the problem with this business, you see. I miss him, too, but, you know, there's always the possibility to phone.
BOYER: Rumors say that you and Andre will be teaming up together in "The Calcium Kid". Right?
BLOOM: I really don't know. Atti's so busy with his stage work; it's his life, really. He loves the movies, but he never really wanted to be part of this business. He never yearned to be a movie star, you know. But sometimes being in the same movie is the only way to be together, so ... who knows? I'll ask him the next time we talk.
BOYER: How do you like his new one-man show?
BLOOM: I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it's awesome. He's a very smart and witty person with a great stage presence. His comedic skills are so unique, it's unbelievable. I loved his last show. I think I've seen it four or five times [...] I certainly would see his new show if he was performing it down here in Australia.
BOYER: Thanks for your time.
