I know about computers, but I don't know everything. Recently my computer has become a lot slower, it's harder and harder to run 2 or 3 programs at once, my IE keeps crashing/freezing, and it makes these weird noises. Like a car reving up or chugging/struggling. I hope that means it's not going to blow up.

Um, anyone have any idea's? Would an upgrade help? Would reinstalling everything help? External HD? Smashing it with a bat?

Of course this all had to happen now. *rolls eyes*

Maybe try reformatting your harddrive? I don't know how to do that because I'm pretty dumb about computers also. But everyone always tells me that's what I should do when stuff like that happens.

Did you go through the virus scan/spybot/defrag ritual?

I was going to suggest spyware because my laptop has had similar problems due to spyware. You can get it scanned for free at several sites, including www.pestpatrol.com. If that's the problem, let me know, I might be able to help you with it, though I don't want to say how publicly. *grins*

The spyware thing could definately be that however if it's making that noise it may be the hard drive going out. Is the computer still under waranty? My real suggestion now would be to back up everything you can, just in case. It may not be that at all it may just be the spyware making it work extra hard.

Hmmm, I don't know if it is. I'll have to check. I've had this computer since June 2002, so it may be. I backed up all my major stuff back in August. Wouldn't hurt to do it again. Thanks. :)

Hmmm... the thing with pestcontrol is a good idea. If you have less than 200 megabytes of working processing space on your C drive that'll make your computer pretty unable to do anything, they tend to get really cranky, so if you have bunches of things on the C drive I'd say burn what you can onto cds or delete what you can. Another thing is System Restore, in Computer Properties, disable that and clean that out and that might help, I had had it turned on at one point, and it began eating up entire gigs >.<

good luck!

well I see the spyware issue has been dealt with - sort of. XD Running ad-aware or spybot will help - and they are very user friendly.

you already did defrag and virus scan...maybe the fans need to be replaced - I had to replace mine. there is a program called clean up which might help - it just frees space though.

otherwise, it might need um something? XD loud noises are generally hardware problems. not being able to do much is a software issue - lack of space, viruses, spyware, etc.

I hope we were all able to help!

Thanks. Since I cleaned it out the loud noises have gone down a bit, now it happens when I start it up or it comes out of standby.

Spyware is probably the main cause - I see that Ad-aware and Spybot has been already recommended (you can find both at download.com). I would say use both, and use both frequently. What one misses the other one picks, and a spyware and adware free computer is a happy one. Having more space on your C drive as has been mentioned as well, and I fully agree. If you have large video/audio files, burn them onto CDs and then delete them, they are huge space eaters. Do not reformat unless the problems still continue after these and you're sure that it is not the fan or something - with each reformat the, um, "quality" gets worse, you'll lose space, and after some time even reformatting won't do a thing. Use that as an emergency thing.

Oy. I don't know what kind of system you have, but if you run Windows XP do *not* let it install the "service pack 2" update for Internet Explorer. It almost hosed my entire system on Tuesday, and my computer has not been working anywhere close to normally since! Just be careful...

And honestly, Spyware should be outlawed. I can't really recommend much more than what's been said, though. If all else fails, *picks up bat and waves threateningly at computer*. ;)

SP2 has made life hell for some and not for others - I don't *think* its as bad for just the average home PC users but I might be wrong - I think it depends on what programs you have (some get along with it some don't and all that).

Anyway - that aside - this board below is very good with resources for various spyware and whatnot and the people are pretty friendly and helpful.

http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25

The HiJackThis program they have links to fixed some issues my computer was having, just be careful using it if you do (post logs and have someone help you out and all that).

Too late. But I guess I'm lucky because the SP2 is working quite well and most of the stuff that has happened to my computer happened before I installed that.

My IE did that awhile back so I went to Netscape and just downloaded a new browser. It's www.netscape.com I think. Or you could do Mozilla at www.mozilla.org which may help as well. You should also consider doing a disc defragmentation every once in awhile and clearing out your disc space. I have often considered smashing mine with a bat. But then where would you be? :) Hope that helps!

1. go through the contents of your computer. uninstall any programs you ont use anymore as well as files you dont need or want anymore
2. defrag and disk cleanup
3. try restarting the registry from a day when your computer worked fine
4. check for and delete spyware (trust me, it can slow your compuer down like mad) and use adaware and hijackthis to get rid of it
5. if all of that doesnt work then save all your important files and then format the c drive (i can tell you how to do this)

if its making a loud noise maybe you need to open it up and clean it out ( the tower that is) mine did that and I found a small fan that was just had to much dust in it. Cleaned it and it started to work great

Sounds like you need to clean up your computer or your computer could be going (Yes, even if it is two years old it can go. What is the brand?). Do what burning said, but also run disk clean up. There is a programme you can get to clean it up REALLY good, but since you have money issues at the moment, (as I do.) you may not want to get it yet.

For spyware, get Ad-aware. If you get mozilla, only download sunbird (older version, do not get the latest. There are bugs in the latest version), thunderbird and firefox. You also may want to see if your computer is up to date.

SP2 does cause computer problems, which they (Microsoft) have mentioned. You may need to update you BIOS before install it. If you do not update your BIOS your computer will crashes or have other problems.

Forgot to mention about clean out your cookies, history and cache files. You can set your browser up to automatically delete this. Also make sure your history is set to 0 days.

Things I've done in the past...

-Download adware. It checks for spyware and crap like that invading you computer and slowing it it up. It's free.

- Going into your Tools, Internet options, delete cookied and delete files. This clears up space from your cache.

- Going into tools, internet setting and raising the bar there to increase the amount of disk spaced used. It raises the amount of memory you use inbetween pages.

- Burning/backing up your files on to a cd and not keeping them all on your computer. It' a pain in the ass to have to whip out a cd to get your stuff, but doing that frees up your computer, your memory and your space.

- Since you defraged and scanned for virus'...not much else I can tell you.

I hope you have some luck with what people have posted.
