To be or not to be

I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I want to find out more about my heritage. To be more specific my Scottish heritage. My grandmother's maiden name was MacBeth (can't get more Scottish than that) and even though she died before I was born I want to find out more about where she came from and her ancestors. She was Canadian born, but someone had to be really Scottish to have the last name MacBeth.
Then what I would love to do is go to Scotland and see stuff about where I'm from. I was born with red hair and blue/green eyes, some have said I must be Irish, but nope (that I know of), I'm part Scottish. No one really knows where that part of me came from since my immediate family doesn't have red hair and blue/green eyes.
I think it'll be interesting. I remember my aunt doing research on our family history years ago, I wonder what she found out. I guess I should talk to her about it and my dad.
I wonder where I should start.
Maybe I'm related to Billy Boyd? That would be so cool!!!!! [/wishful thinking]

Date: 2005-08-11 10:21 pm (UTC)I could ask my mom about the research, though. We've done a lot of research on our family history and she has some connections in that field (she's a museum) curator. I'm sure she could come up with some good tips.
Weird that my grandparents are going to a family reunion tomorrow to find out about this stuff. just odd.

Date: 2005-08-11 10:54 pm (UTC)Neither does my family. We are Norweigan, Swedish, and German. Both my older sister and I are redheads, but before us, you have to go to great grandmother.
That being said, Id say with a name like MacBeth, Id say you have some Scottish blood.

LOL I've never had vicodin, but I hear it's wonderful.

Date: 2005-08-12 06:49 am (UTC)Vicodin is loverly. But it makes me very strange. I mean, stranger than usual. Mwah! And my whole body is sort of numb and floaty feeling!

Date: 2005-08-12 01:30 am (UTC)And like stated above, blue eyes are recessive...unless you are part of my family, in which brown eyes are the odd thing (my grandmother, my mother and me on both sides of very large families).
My last name is Scottish, so I have a little mixed in there. They came to Canada as well. Apparently I have lots of family that I've never met in Canada, and a woman (fourth cousin of mine or something?) also did research on the family a few years ago...
Wouldn't it be weird if we were like...distantly related? o.O

Date: 2005-08-12 02:12 am (UTC)I am Scottish, German, Welsh, English...I can't quite remember right now.
I have red hair and blue eyes. My dad does also, but I'm the only child that inherited the red hair/blue eyes/freckles.
My grandma (on my other side, from Germany) paid a few bucks for someone to research that side of the families history...she got names dating back to 1100-ish. It was insane. It's so interesting, though. If you're curious, you should definelty look it up.

Date: 2005-08-12 03:41 am (UTC)Sorry, had to say that. LOL But that would be a cool thing to do. There's something called Ancestry.com that can help, but they charge a fee. Or maybe to some research at a Hall of Records type facility where you live.
I know on my mom's side of the family there's Italian, French, different Native American tribes(same with my dad, the Native American part), Irish, Brit, Japanese and more stuff. LOL This could be really interesting to see where you came from. I have the same thing with the hair and eyes. My hair is light brown, have green eyes and light complexion, where as my immediate family have dark hair and eyes and medium to dark complexions(except my dad, his eyes were hazel).
Well, good luck with the research Highland lass. ;o)
Take Care!

Date: 2005-08-12 05:48 am (UTC)Yes, it is a very Scottish (and quite spiffy) name.
Anyway, I think researching your history is such a cool idea. Besides, it's Scotland, and that would be such an amazing place to look into things! And don't forget, not only did it provide the wonderful Billy Boyd, Scotland also gave us Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor, and...Gerard Butler. Hot men in kilts? The possibilities are endless!

Date: 2005-08-12 06:09 am (UTC)Scotland fucking rocks (as does your icon *drool*, Gerard in Timeline is oh so yummy!) If you ever get to go back to the motherland, definitely check out Edinburgh..and St Andrews is good for a day trip (especially if your a golf fan, it's where it all began). Also, you should go check out the castle where they filmed most of Monty Python & The Holy Grail (unfortunately I wasn't able to make it there)!
