Staples is giving me $1400 for a new laptop. Unfortunately I can only get it as credit, so I can't cash it and go somewhere else and get a new computer. So, I can get a new computer or $1400 worth of pens.

They also won't give me back my old laptop, I figured they wouldn't, but they may not send it back to me just so I can get everything off of it. I might have to go all the way out to their service center and put everything on disk, or pay a tech $80 an hour to do it for me. Nothing is ever easy.

But doesn't staples have laptops? I mean I know they suck but why can't you get a new one there and if it breaks just take it somewhere else for repairs? Where's their service center?
And yeah, staples is evil. Canada needs Fry's!

Yeah, Staples has laptops, that's why they're giving me the credit to their store. That's where I got my old laptop. :) Their service center is about a 45 minute drive 2 hour bus ride away from me. :(

So...why don't you get the laptop there and then pitch a bitch fit for them to give you the information from your old one? Ok ok, easier said than done...lol

This is ridiculous. They lost it. That's the only explanation, and it's a shit one at that. Why else would it take this long? Why wouldn't they give it back to you to get your files off? Hell, they lost it or they broke it beyond anything fixable. Either way, they fucked up and are refusing to fess up. If it wouldn't be such a pain (and expensive) I'd say get an attorney and do some damage. Bastards deserve to be called out.

I'm boycotting Staples. This shit has seriously pissed me off. It just isn't right.

I actually know they didn't lose it. They shipped my laptop back to me while I waited for the part to come in again, so they haven't lost it. They just don't make that particular part in order to fix it anymore and don't want to admit it.

That is BS that they aren't giving you an option for backup. I get the store credit thing, but the fact that they aren't offering to pull the files is BS

Yay on the credit, but booooh on the rest. It's their fault it took so long and now your laptop is screwed. And now they refuse to do a file backup for you for free, sheesh, good customer service is something alien to them.

You can buy some very snazzy pens with $1400, that's for sure. ;)

They should. I'm really pissed about that. If they won't back up my files they can at least let me have my computer for a day or two while I get my files backed up.

Did they give you the option to keep the computer instead of taking the store credit? What is wrong with the laptop? Is that part so important that you need to get a new computer?

Nope. But I'm sure if I asked they would.

All the USB plugs/ports are broken and sometimes my computer just restarts istelf because there is a hardwear problem. It needs a whole new motherboard. I could just continue using my laptop, but if I wan't to download photos from my camera or use the printer or anything that requres something with a USB port, then I'm screwed.

1. good that they are giving you so much for a new computer. most would just call it your loss and give you about half of that.

2. But, why won't they give you your old laptop...technically, you own it, right? Either way, they should give you a week to do it in your home, and then bring it back to them. Dimwits.

*hugs*

Yeah, I own it, but they won't give me the the $1400 for a new one if I keep it. It's crazy, but that's the way it is.

I got a real lemon from CompUSA year before last. They had to replace the power jack in the back 3 times and the keyboard twice because Toshiba had done a crappy manufacturing job on it. They eventually replaced the whole thing for me.

Ask if they'd be willing to switch out the harddrives for you. If the problems was with some other part of the computer, then it should work just fine. In the end, you get to keep all your files, you don't have to pay for someone else to do all the work, and you don't have to go through the hassle of moving all your files again. And they shouldn't really complain because your only getting one harddrive in the end.

When My toshiba finally died earlier this year(mommy spilled coffee on it), I had a computer guy take out the harddrive and put it in an x-drive. Which basically gives me a second hard drive that's the size of a check book, and can hook up to any computer that is usb compatible. Maybe because of all the hassle, they'll let you keep the old hard drive. The x-drive I bought was only $50US, but is worth every penny. I effectively have the 40GB I had on the Toshiba, plus the 60GB I have on the new computer I have now. I save all my files and everything on it, as back up.
